Harriet Barber is an international reporter, specialising in human rights abuses, migration, environmental destruction, sexual violence, abortion access and politics.

Harriet has filed dispatches from more than a dozen countries, including Ukraine, Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Zambia, Ghana, the United States. She is currently based in Latin America, and is working as the Guardian’s stringer in Colombia. Harriet has also worked with the Sunday Times, the BBC, New Lines Magazine, the New Internationalist, the Telegraph, and writes a fortnightly column for The New World newspaper.

Harriet has investigated war crimes committed by occupying Russian forces in Ukraine; sexual slavery by armed groups in Colombia’s war-torn Catatumbo region; the violent repression of indigenous communities amid Argentina’s battle for lithium; accusations of human trafficking against Opus Dei; and the hostile treatment of Afghan refugees living in the UK.

Her on-the-ground reporting has also included covering the Pantanal’s devastating 2024 wildfires, Argentina’s election of Javier Milei and the assassination of Colombian presidential candidate Miguel Uribe. She regularly covers live Ukraine and Gaza war news, works as a photographer, and has produced more than a dozen short films.

Harriet has been named a finalist for the Amnesty Gaby Rado award, the Society of Editors’ Young Journalist of the Year award, and Press Gazette’s New Journalist of the Year, and was highly commended in the international affairs category for 30 journalists to watch 2023. She has completed hostile environment training, received NCTJ qualifications and trained with the Centre for Investigative Journalism.
